Amid tight security provided by a combination of Police, Army, officials of the State Security Services and Civil Defence, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), yesterday, matriculated 10,000 students into various programmes of the institution. The tight security mounted by the law enforcement agencies followed the threat by striking non-academic staff of the institution to disrupt the exercise over alleged failure to address their welfare. They had gathered as early as 7:00 a.m. and blocked the main entrance into the campus, apparently to prevent matriculating students, parents, friends and others from accessing the premises. The timely intervention of security personnel, led by the Nsukka Area Commander, Mr. Steve Yabanet, and the Divisional Police Officer for Nsukka, however, restored normalcy. They contained the protesters and cleared the way for human and vehicular movement.
